Pulp Fiction Opening Sequence

Pulp Fiction Analysis

Pulp Fiction is a 1994 film directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film is comprised of few stories, the stories all mingling together at some points. It takes into account the experiences of a boxer, two hit men, their boss' wife, and a couple robbing a cafe. The opening sequence starts off with a man and woman talking in a cafe, the way the man is sitting seems like he is a laidback easy going type of man, and the woman seems very open to talk about violence which shows she could be a dangerous character. The over shoulder shots show they are a couple the way they converse with each other and show a lot of eye contact show they are close. Then the shot of when the man puts his gun on the table shows the couple are criminals even though the conversation between the two is about scaring people and not actually killing those shows the irony between their attitude and the gun. There are a lot of over the shoulder shots which help the audience understand the characters by the reactions and expressions on their faces.

The Godfather Opening Sequence

The Godfather Analysis

The Godfather is a 1972 gangster film. The opening sequence of The Godfather is set in a dark room with two mean talking the lighting is focused on the guy talking which shows the importance of what he is saying, also the music at the start is quite short and the use of a trumpet which is melodic and sounds like the soundtrack which is quite calming and relaxing. There were only 3 shots in the opening 4 minutes of this scene which shows how everything in this scene is shown through how the characters act. It starts off a close up of the man then as he progresses on telling his story it fades out to a medium shot of him then even further to behind The Dons chair. You then have a shot of the back of The Dons chair where you can only see the back of his head and arm which shows how mysterious and important this character must be due to the arrangement of the shot. The last shot is a close up of The Don which finally lets the audience know what he looks like and just from that one shot the blank expression on his face shows his power and respect he demands from others. Both characters are wearing suits so it can show they handle business in a professional way, also The Don has a right hand man in the room and he moves his hand in order to tell him to get the other man a drink which shows his authority.
